Our Next President?

I recently attended the Indiana Fall GOP Dinner which featured Gov. Mitch Daniels (R-IN) as the keynote speaker. While I have heard Mitch speak countless times before, this particular speech was different than most. At one point he said, “Now I want to close with just a few thoughts that fall outside our borders…” Obviously my ears perked up, and so did quite a few others nationally, including Red State.

Mitch has that important ability to connect with Independent and Republican voters who regret their vote for Obama. I hope he remains part of the national conversation in 2012.

Regret their vote for Obama? Indeed, these past 11 months have been a real eye opener for me and a lot of other Democrats. There may be Dems who have regrets for voting for him in the primary. Because his biggest mistake, IMO, is that he apparently continues to believe that the Dems can negotiate with the GOP in trying to achieve social progress when they are willing to mischaracterize, to put it kindly, his very-reasonable agenda as “Socialism.” THEY are the extremists. They refuse to negotiate. Trying to negotiate with these GOPers will only lead to failure. The only way forward is to shove his agenda down their throats.

I know little about Mitch Daniels. He may be wonderful. His problem is his party.

Shame this story isn’t on the front page of the Star instead of the throngs of people waiting to see Sarah Palin.

Voted for Mitch and Obama. Don’t regret either, by the way.

  3. I’ve never before listened to Mitch Daniels but watched 3/4 of this before I got bored and quit. I agree entirely with his take on Obama, but what is the vision for our country that animates him?

I agree that his opponents should quit harping on the “socialist” theme. Socialism has its good points, evil as it is. Even totalitarian communism had its good moments. Obama is skipping all the good parts that animated those movements and is skipping straight to the decadence and corruption. His only saving grace is that he isn’t very good at what he tries to do.

  4. Who has been able to accomplish socialism without decadence and corruption? Socialism means transferring control over something from the many to the relative few. Recall Lord Acton’s famous quip…

    Jerry,

When did Obama attempt to negotiate with the GOP over anything? And WHEN in this presidency has any social issue been on the front burner? All the focus has been on either economics, or the war, or foreign policy.
