Richard Winger’s Ballot Access News reports that Democrats and Republicans have missed the August 26th deadline to place a presidential candidate on the ballot in Texas. According to the Texas Secretary of State website, Bob Barr and Wayne Allyn Root are the only candidates for president and vice-president that will appear on the ballot in the Lone Star State.

In a press release sent from Bob Barr 2008, Russ Verney said, “Unless the state of Texas violates their own election laws, Congressman Barr will be the only presidential candidate on the ballot,” adding that “Texas law makes no exceptions for missing deadlines.”
Who wants to bet they’ll make an exception this time?
hat tip: Jacob
Update: PoliTex is reporting that the Texas Secretary of State has confirmed that both parties filed by the deadline; she’s expecting amendmended filings specifying who each party wants on the ballot once they finish their official nominations at the conventions.
Update II: My friend Jacob adds, “As a Chicagoan this sounds normal. ‘Oh look over dare! It’s da filing papers for the Democrats and Republicans. Day were dare da whole time.’”
Texas law may make no exception, but I’d bet that the Secretary of State has the power to make an exception.
I noticed that Cynthia McKinney is a registered write-in candidate! Turns out she’s the Green Party candidate. I didn’t think that party could descend any further into the lunatic fringe, but I was wrong!
