By Request: InBev and Budweiser

Commenter JP asks, “Will the backlash against Bud’s buyout dramatically affect its sales and profitability for InBev, and how long will it be until Americans give up on caring about it?”
The backlash against InBev will mostly be confined to Missouri politicians hemming and hawing about an otherwise unremarkable business deal. Consumers mostly care about quality and price, not corporate ownership. InBev will only suffer if they take a risk on changing either of those two variables. Americans will give up caring about the deal by the next time they buy some beer.

I think that some people will care about the ownership, but that may be a small percentage. However, even 1% of the sales of a company like Budweiser would be significant.
I actually prefer my favorite South American brewer to the Belgian king of Beers mentioned above.
Is Coors still American? Or is the biggest American beermaker now Sam Adams?

  2. Sam Adams is now the biggest American brewer. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the largest, is now Belgian. MillerCoors, the 2nd largest, is managed from Canada. Pabst is the 4th largest beermaker but they do not own a brewery and instead contract to have their beer made at Miller’s breweries. Thus, in terms of American brewers (those that own and operate a brewery), Samuel Adams is the biggest.

Wow, and I thought I was being at least a little non-conformist for preferring Sam Adams over other American beers. I had no idea they were the 2nd (and now the 1st) largest American-owned brewery.

But if consumers care about quality and price…then why exactly is InBev able to expect solid sales from Budweiser?

the selling of america to the socialists
and we think our brand of capitalism is the best in the world
we borrow from communists, socialists and kings to keep our brand of capitalism afloat
and we continue to brag about how great capitalism is
    american self righteous ness

Zach is right about this. Americans (outside of Missouri) will stop caring about InBev the moment they reach for their first case of Bud.
