Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has publicly outed himself as a Christian for the very first time, during surprise visit to the tomb of St Francis of Assisi. “[St Francis'] story fascinates me and has played a fundamental role in my life,” he said. As a Communist leader, Gorbachev had to officially support atheism, but there were frequent rumors, even among Ronald Reagan’s cabinet, that Gorbachev held religious beliefs.
Fascinating. I wonder why he’s waited this long to publicly acknowledge his faith, though. I don’t see how there would have been negative repercussions for him 5 or even 10 years ago.
