Human Rights Commission, Belasrusian Style

Ezra Levant, the publisher mentioned in Mr. Claybourn's article below, may want to send Alyaksandr Zdvizhkow flowers. On Friday, a Minsk city judge sentenced the deputy editor of the now-defunct newspaper Zhoda to serve three years in a "medium-security prison."

The impetus for his conviction? After reprinting the verboten Danish Muhammad cartoon in early 2006, the mufti of the Spiritual Association of Muslims in Belarus filed a complaint. Zdvizhkow was found guilty of "inciting racial, national or religious enmity or discord," in violation of Paragraph II of the city's Criminal Code, Art. 120. The intemperate associate editor has been in custody since 2007.

Islamofascist-Dhimmi Axis Assault on Free Speech

Muslims Against Sharia strongly denounce President Lukashenko and his KGB thugs for imprisoning Alexander Sdvizhkov. While most of the former Soviet Republics are embracing Democracy and Reform, Belarus continues to enforce fascist rules of communist era. Muslims Against Sharia demand immediate release of Alexander Sdvizhkov and reinstatement of "Zgoda" newspaper.

Mr. Sdvizhkov is convicted for incitement of religious and national hatred. We already know that Islamophobia or even mere criticism of Islam is racism, because Islam is a race. And thanks to the Dhimmis from Belarus, now we've learned that Islam is also a nationality. We should expect Islam to be declared a gender any day now.

Alexander Sdvizhkov is not alone. The latest casualties of Islamofascist-Dhimmi Axis Assault on Free Speech include Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, Fouad al-Farhan, Joe Kaufman, Paul Ray, Michael Savage, Mark Steyn, TomaShot, Andrew Whitehead, and many others. So, hatred against Muslims is okay? There are laws in many countries forbidding negative portrayal of Jews and other groups. I'm not suggesting that those kinds of censorship are justified, but isn't there a double standard here?

What's the difference between the Muhammed cartoons, as well as the many other cartoons villifying Muslims, and cartoons demonizing Japenese-Americans in WWII, German-Americans in WWI, and blacks in the Jim Crow era? The bottom line is that our descendants are going to view us as bigoted, just as we view our predecessors from those eras as bigoted. It is time for hatred against Muslims to stop, especially in the U.S. A way to start would be for people to speak out against negative cartoons (in a peaceful manner, of course).

Whose double standard do you think it is?

Standards are not universal. Perhaps one set of standards should serve for all humanity in an ideal world, but that is not the case today. There are cultural, social, and political differences between nations, and for better or worse, those nations have the right to create their own laws and to enforce them uniformly.

If you are outraged by what you see as miscarriage of justice in a different part of the world or by someone else's religion, then by all means let your voice be heard. Go ahead, and write letters. I do. But understand that it is your subjective opinion that you are expressing.

I guess citing Marx's statements on religion would incite "religious enmity or discord," too. Belarus has definitely abandoned Communism - but not in a good way.
