One Cheer for Giuliani, and an Epitaph
The New York Times is reporting that after their candidate fumbled questions about his stance on abortion at the GOP presidential debate last week and elsewhere, the Giuliani camp is just going to come clean, keep it simple, and run the former mayor as a pro-choice Republican. The mayor's people think he can still win the nomination by going after the big liberal states like New York, California, and New Jersey who hold their primaries on February 5th, rather than the traditionally route of more conservative states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. If he wins, he'd be the first pro-choice GOP nominee in a generation.
I gotta give some respect to the former mayor for deciding to run as himself, unlike some other people we know. But respect doesn't get the votes out. Rudy will still have support among people who think security is the only issue in this election, but I don't see that as enough. And even he does win the nomination, can a Republican win the general election without the pro-life base? Perhaps someday, but not in 2008.
Thanks for playing, Rudy.

While Giuliani's pro-choice stance is reported to be gestating, behold my old mayor's flip-flops on civil unions, immigration, the flat tax, and public funding for abortions. As for abortion in general, I'd prefer to wait and see the new-old-Rudy position before raining down the hosannas.
Then there are his flip-flops with regards to Bernie Kerik.
Prior to Rudy's testimony last year in front of a Bronx grand jury investigating his old police commissioner, hizzoner claimed he was never told of Kerik's ties to a mobbed up NJ company when he made him top cop.
However, under oath, he admitted that his former chief investigator did brief him on those ties. So our mayor ignored them, and appointed a man with ties to organized crime to be our city's police commissioner. I hope America's Mayor isn't running as a law and order kinda guy.
Rudy doesn't desrve a cheer, he deserves a razzberry.
Meanwhile in the what's good for the goose doesn't apply to the gander department: the Village Voice is taking an extended look at the almost $200,000 in four World Series rings my ex-mayor received from the NY Yankee organization, in possible violation of the law. (City officials are barred from accepting more than $50 worth of gifts from anyone doing business with the city.) City officials are also required to disclose gifts from anyone who's not a relation, and the mayor failed to do that with any of the rings.
He blasted David Dinkins for taking unreported gifts during their mayoral run, and his administration aggressively pursued city officials for doing exactly what he did with the rings.

I don't know. I have a sinking suspicion you're right about the Dem ticket (though I'd love to see an Obama/Richardson ticket), but I honestly don't believe that McCain will ever see his name on a ticket.

Oh, I don't know... how about
McCain/Lieberman or Lieberman/McCain ?
Not that I am advocating for either of those, but just supposing. This would be a third party, of course.

I'd vote for a McCain/Lieberman third party ticket in a heartbeat over a Romney or Edwards-led ticket. I seriously doubt such a third party option would ever materialize, though, so I pray that I'll never have to choose between John and Mitt.

"raining down the hosannas" != one cheer. I'm still a Giuliani skeptic.
Obama/Richardson on the Democratic side would be a ridiculously strong ticket.
Somehow, my gut tells me McCain is going to win the GOP nomination because of fatal flaws in both Giuliani and Romney. Unfortunately, he generates about as much excitement as Bob Dole, and will probably have similar results.
