Open Thread: Lent

It is now Lent, a time of repentance, of reflecting on Christ's final days, and of checking your self-esteem at the door. Anyone disciplining themselves by giving up something for Lent, or by renewing a commitment to something? I had decided to give up caffeine and beer, and, without even thinking, have failed one of those already. I am a man of unclean lips!

I have decided to give something up. Because I was still in the process of evaluating whether I was really going to commit to it, I allowed myself a "one last time" on Wednesday but held firm today. I've told only one person what it is because I'm fearful I won't be able to stick with it.

I also wonder if it is a "worthy" choice. It's certainly a personal sacrifice, so it fits the bill in that respect. But to what end? Is sacrifice as the end result good enough? I'm thinking it might be because it stays fresh in my mind almost all day, which helps me to reflect more on what Lent is and should be for me.
