Why oh why can't we have a better . . .
Glossy, puff-laden, dumbed-down national newsmagazine for the lowest common denominator: Newsweek edition. Check out the covers on the left-hand side. (via A Commonplace Book)

I'm not surprised. A friend of mine (and yours, actually) was at my place last week and commented on the stack of Newsweeks laying on the table: "What news?"
(My mom got me the subscription. *shrugs*)

I have a similar opinion of Time. When I was in high school I did a report on Howard Jarvis' campaign to roll back California property taxes. Time had a huge cover story, most of which was informationless. I wound up using an article in The Progressive as my major source. It was less than one page and had a wealth of facts and figures.
At the time I didn't know anything about the political left or right (or where The Progressive existed in that spectrum), but I liked the idea of tax liberation. And a lefty magazine supported that conviction.

You would think that in the Internet Age, they would think twice before they offered up such blatant double-speak. I'm sure that the impact of feeding ourselves narcissistic drivel while the world hears about how were "losing" Afghanistan is not a net positive (for them or us).
