The Chronicles of Narnia

Need an Easter gift for the kids? I highly recommend this edition of the Chronicles of Narnia, which includes all seven books in the Narnia series in storyline order, plus an essay by C.S. Lewis on the origins of Narnia and on how to write for children. Never having read the series as a child, I'm working my way through this edition right now.

I second David's recommendation. Like him, I didn't read the series as a kid, but I started reading it (this very edition) last summer in anticipation of the theatrical release.

I also picked up this edition last summer. Compared to buying the books individually (which would run around $60 if you got lucky), this one's a no-brainer.

You guys need to learn about 2 places that will rock your world: used bookstores and the local library. :)

Local what?

I'm totally a dork about books - I hate having them in anything short of perfect condition. If I can get what I want at a used bookstore in the condition I like, then I do. If the price is really cheap on mass-market paperbacks, say 10 for $5, then I'll not complain about their condition. Otherwise, I'll just spend the money on the new version. (Yes, I realize how neurotic that is.)

As for libraries, I love them. I've read a lot of books I'd've never otherwise read thanks to them. But I really enjoy owning books, and so I often buy them - even after I've already read through the library copy.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Nick. I like to own the really good books--classics, my favorite authors, etc. At this season in my life, it takes me too long to get through a novel for me to check it out from a library. But used book stores really do rock. I should try to find a good one near where I live.
