Errata

The "$2.89" in my previous post should read "$3.05." Sincerest apologies for any inconvenience.

Also, the price for a barrel of oil has surpassed $75. But don't worry, the energy companies like Exxon, Chevron, and BP are making a killing.

There's a good on MSNBC's site article called, "What's up with oil, gasoline prices?" that pegs the cost of crude oil at 47 percent of the cost of a gallon of regular gas, only slightly different from the WaPo figures.

Anyway, the price of crude oil is determined in the futures market, and it looks like speculators are betting that we Americans will be willing to pay just about anything for a gallon of gas. THAT may be a big factor in driving those per-barrel crude oil prices upward towards $100/barrel.

Just returned from Hawaii, where $3.42 is pretty typical.
