The Other Tourney

Here's a question: say you're a mens college basketball team with a proud history like Michigan or Stanford, or you won the NCAA national title a mere four years ago like my alma mater Maryland, and you win the NIT, do you even display the banner?

Of course they should. I think it was rather unsportsmanlike of Maryland to initially turn the bid down, as if those teams aren't good enough for them to bother playing - especially since Maryland obviously wasn't any better.

Winning the NIT isn't winning the NCAA, sure, but I doubt you'd advise Olympians (in a similar vein) not to display their silver and bronze medals in a sport where they'd previously performed better. Maryland shouldn't be snotty about not getting into the NCAAs; it's no one's fault but their own.

There was a time where the NIT was the more prestigious tournament, the NCAA was the "Not-Invited-Tournament" of its day.

As a Clemson University basketball fan, I pine away for the hope of winning a NIT title, for the hope of defeating the hated South Carolina Gamecocks, NIT defending champs, in Madison Square Garden in a couple of weeks.

Oh that would be true.

I wouldn't hang the NIT banner. I'd hang Gary Williams instead.

The presence of an NIT banner will just give visiting ACC teams like Carolina something to point to and ridicule. The NCAA championship banner standing alone is a powerful statement.

After the events of this past weekend, I'm inclined to agree with your first paragraph, Glenn.
