If 18-21 year-olds weren’t so busy drinking and partying, maybe they could muster the lobbying power (they are of voting age) to change drinking-age laws in various states. They are so powerful in economic terms, with hollywood et al. constantly marketing to them; you’d think they could manage to translate that into political power if it was a cause (such as changing the drinking age) that most could rally ’round.
In your comment to Blesch’s post you linked to the Des Moines Register for a story you “found that students at at least two schools have been prosecuted for posting pictures on facebook of themselves drinking underage” None of the students in those cases was “prosecuted”. They were subject to campus discipline for possession of alcohol in prohibited areas, like dorm rooms.
I think it’s past the time to leave this at your apology and stop trying to manufacture some justification. If Ms Ellsworth got away with something, she got away with it when no law enforcement official caught her in a misdemeanor. Posting pictures of yourself committing a misdemeanor is not a crime, nor is it the basis for a prosecution in a society of laws. If your position now is that Ms Ellsworth ought to be “prosecuted” by IU, you should say so, and accept the thanks of every other student who’s stepped in the snare. But this tends to argue against your contention that it’s “more than a family matter,” doesn’t it?
