Our Neighbors to the North

The story has been flying under the radar here in the States, but our Canadian friends to the North are holding their general elections today. Though Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin is putting on a brave face, most polls are predicting an overwhelming victory for the Conservative party under Stephen Harper. The Liberals tried to paint Harper as an extremist conservative ("We have a party that wants to take this country to the far, far right of the U.S. conservative movement"), it was not enough to overcome the anxious last few months under Paul Martin. It will be interesting to see what kind of relationship ideological bedfellows Harper and Bush will have during the remainder of the president's term.

Fascinating stuff from the Geddy Lee fan club. Looks like the Conservatives will get their government, but not with the majority they hoped for. The BQ lost a lot of votes to the Tories, which can't be good for them, since in a lot of ways they got their start as a Conservative splinter group.

Not only should we watch to see how Harper and Bush get along, but also how Harper governs with a "mere" plurality. He indicated during the campaign that he will play compromiser if he doesn't have a majority.

Red Province/Blue Province is another subtheme, as the Conservatives dominated rural Canada, and the Liberals captured the urban areas.

It seems that voters weren't buying Martin's attempts at stirring up anti-American feeling to cover up his own corruption and incompetence. I'll toast the end of one-party rule in Canada, to borrow Paul Martin's ironic description of US politics. Who's with me?

It's certainly my (very non-expert) impression that the Liberal party was pretty deserving of getting bumped.
