Here's Lookin' at You, Peyton

Big BenI must say I appreciate all the quiet confidence from ITA's native Hoosiers this week regarding tomorrow's big game, as opposed to last time, when Colts fans were talking as if an 11-0 start made them the greatest team of all time. The fact that no one is going Cincinnati Bengal-like giddy is a big improvement.

Seriously though, 99.44 percent of the experts are predicting the Colts to win this one, and even as a Steelers fan I see no reason to disagree with them. Even the big guy to the left said this week that the Steelers would have to play their A-plus game while the Colts play their B-minus game for it to happen.

But there's one guy I found predicting a Steelers win, and I love his methodology. I hope most of our readers aren't too young to remember the greatness that was Techmo Bowl. I hate to spoil it for you, but it looks like the Colts could have used Bo Jackson.

I just remember there was some play for the Chicago Bears that never failed. Maybe something involving Walter Payton.

Ha, I loved TechmoBowl! Though, as for his "methodology": suddenly stuffing the run against the team that was arguably the most successful running against them in the regular season (how long was that sub-100yd runner streak that Edge snapped?), and suddenly sacking Manning like he's David Carr?

Wishful thinking.

There are ways to beat the Colts. Namely: take advantage of special teams, and exploit the defensive edge with screen passes and cut-back runs. But if the Colts get a lead, this game is probably over. They thrive at making teams one-dimensional, and then exploiting that dimension.

I think it'll be a great game - both AFC matchups should be.

Here's praying no one is seriously injured, and that both teams bring their A games!

Another heartbreaking end to the season for the Colts. Vanquish one enemy, and another emerges from the pack. I am beginning to think the Colts have more in common with my Browns than I first thought. At least we all hate the Stillers now.

Damn Canadian.

Sorry but it isn't Vandy's fault for this one. He missed a kick which he would have not missed if the Colts got him an extra 10 yards or so. A 46 yard kick from a slight angle, even in a dome, is no easy shakes. Not even Mark Moseley, the great Redskins kicker, would have an easy time of it.

Besides great teams don't let their fortunes rest on the shoulders of a kicker. They win games with passes, runs, even defenses. But never with kickers. The offensive line didn't protect Manning all day and the defensive line made Big Ben look like the second coming of Montana and Theismann combined. And remember, this is an offense whose best players include an aging running back, a choke-artist (while at Georgia) whose last name rhymes with a certain brand of ketchup and a former no-name speedster. If not for two bad calls by the officials against the Steelers, the Colts wouldn't have even come close. And they didn't deserve even that much; they played like crap.

Manning is too much of a robot, especially in the playoffs. He doesn't have the flair or the improvisational skills of an Elway or Montana. The talent level on the current Colts team is probably closer to that of Montana's 49ers than Elway's early Broncos squads. In other words, Peyton is running out of excuses.

Wow.... is that Tony as in Tony Dungy? :)

Actually, I think the Colts problems stem from the fact that Peyton is given too much freedom. Audibles on every play, going for the TD when 10 yards would have gotten them a much easier FG, etc. Waiving off the punting team struck me (as a Steelers fan) as showing up the coach and an act of hubris. If Ben did something like that, Cowher would grab his facemask, throw him around for a bit, and then put the statuesque Tommy Maddox in the game.

Your right about the Colts' level of talent. This is not Marino playing with an inferior Dolphins' squad. The Colts have the talent level of a SB team, but they need to reign in the QB's ego. Who's the boss... Peyton or Tony?
