President mandates ethics briefings

President Bush sent a memo to White House staff members Friday announcing mandatory “ethics” briefings next week. The week-long series of “refresher lectures” on general ethics rules and the protection of classified information appears to be in response to the recent indictment of Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby in the CIA leak probe. The lectures will be conducted by the office of White House Counsel Harriet Miers, and are mandatory for any staff member with a security clearance. Presidential advisor Karl Rove, who has also been under investigation by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald in the CIA leak case, will be required to attend the sessions. AP has more.

Man, these jokes write themselves. These are the times when I miss doing standup. I’m guessing they waited until the end of the season for new Bill Maher shows to announce this on purpose.

Ed, that’s why we have the Daily Show and the Colbert Report.

Not to mention that TDS and TCR are tons better than the asinine drivel on Maher’s show.

Mandatory continuous education meetings like this on ethics, sexual harrassment and the like are fairly common in businesses. Unemployed people are not expected to know this.

    TCR>TDS.

They may be pretty common, don, but I’d expect the announcement to come not from the CEO, but from the HR department (in this case I suppose that would be the Chief of Staff). Obviously somebody thinks it would be good PR to put Bush’s signature on some ethics requirement.
Anyway, they probably had similar classes at Enron and Tyco, too, for all the good they did.

  7. I’d just like to reaffirm what Paul said. TCR>TDS.

FWIW, that has not been the case in my experience. I’ve received many formal announcements about mandatory training from my divisional or organizational leadership.
I’d just like to reaffirm what Paul said. TCR>TDS.
Feh. I’ve never really liked Colbert. Comes across as too smug and sardonic to me. De gustibus non est disputandum, I guess.
