News Flash: Harry Potter Movie is Entertaining

Ok, so I fought with the 14 year-olds to stand in line for the 7:30 seating of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire while all other people my age were tending to young children, making money, or getting drunk. But I am hooked on the series, books and movies alike.

For fans of the books, the movies are bound to be anti-climactic. I knew going in how Goblet was going to end. The thrill is in the sensory, not the storytelling (although it must take a bit of skill to turn a 700+ page book into a 2 1/2 hour movie). And the newest film excels at the sensory, especially visual effects. In the first 20 minutes, we are treated to the Quidditch World Cup, complete with a vibrant campground city and a stadium that makes Nou Camp look like the Reitz Bowl. A Pegasus-drawn carriage is equally impressive. This movie is fun to watch.

There is no sense in discussing the plot or the story. Just go pick up the book; despite its length, you can finish in 2-3 days of dedicated reading. One nice writing touch is making Cedric Diggory a very likable character. I remember being lukewarm on him in print. This move gives the second half some emotional weight, which is a useful addition.

Despite liking Goblet, I'd like to see a hiatus on Harry Potter movies. Let's wait 10-15 years, cast all new actors, and see how the next generation of fantasy filmmakers translates these adventures to cell.

First things first. I enjoyed "Walk the Line." I don't know enough Cash biography to know how accurate the movie is, but I found it very engaging. It seemed that Phoenix stepped into the Cash persona fairly well.

I too enjoyed Goblet. But I did it smart and went to the midnight showing, thus limiting my exposure to a vast majority of the pubescent throng.

Well, that made no sense whatsoever.

Someday, I really hope that comment-spammers can do a full-context analysis of what is already written before diving in with something completely as off-topic as that one was. Not to mention being more incoherent than Amanda Marcotte, which definately takes some doing.

Adam, please do your readers a favor and dump the amazingly long piece of whatever it it that has nothing to do with your topic from kstreetfriend's baby girl. Scrolling past it is a pain and the typos and bad layout certainly make it virtually unreadable.

That having been said I have to respond to your comment about a hiatus for the movies. I couldn't disagree more strongly. If they can stick to a filming schedule that would let the current young actors finish the series believably I would find that much more rewarding. Why? Simply because the idea of these same actors reflecting the growing that the characters do even as they grow up holds much more appeal to me and the people I've discussed it with than seeing how a new group would treat it years later when they would be coming into it in the middle of the series. That's what remakes are for. Maybe a well done mini-series from the BBC for each of the books. That would be the best thing to see, I think.

To give you an idea of how much I like the series, I not only have read the books several times but I also bought the British editions from amazon.co.uk. It's really pretty affordable and fun to look for the differences.

The Latin version of the first book is pretty cool, too, even if it takes me 40 times as long to read.

Anyone else see Walk the Line? I haven't... yet. I only worry about the singing not being so good. No way Phoenix's voice is 1/10th as strong as J.R. Cash's.

That said, I bet the story is pretty close to authentic. I read that Cash and June Carter had significant roles in approving director, script, etc.

Phoenix singing as good as Cash? No, he wasn't, but he was pretty decent. I read somewhere that he practiced for months.

I'm both a Cash and Phoenix fan and I thought casting Phoenix worked fairly well.

I haven't gotten to see the Harry Potter movie yet due to an illness in the household, much less Walk the Line (and that one will probably have to wait until DVD) but there was a piece on NPR interviewing the director and he told of how he and his wife flew to Tennessee multiple times to speak to them. He went into detail of how the first meeting went and it was obvious how much respect he had for them while not going into hero worship, always a good start for this kind of project.

Adam, who calls the "man in black" J.R. Cash? (other than, of course, credit card applications in the mail)

Posted by: Terry J. Record at November 21, 2005 12:13 PM | permalink

J.R. Cash was his birth name and he used it until he joined the military, which wouldn't accept that as a name, so he became John R. Cash. That according to IMDB. So his family would have known him as J.R. not as "Johnny." So, "J.R." is beyond "credit card" stuff.

True, but I'm not a member of the Cash family. I, along with everyone else here, simply know him via his stage persona - and the name he wished to associate with that persona.

J.R. has fewer characters than Johnny. Easier to type. I am lazy.

it all adds up.
