Miers in the balance

New polling data confirms conservative disappointment with Miers, particularly relative to John Roberts. Democrats are also heavily opposed to Miers and one wonders whether such polling may influence how Senators decide to vote.

Meanwhile there continues to be growing opposition among conservative leaders and pundits. "An anguished James Dobson prayed Wednesday for a sign from God, telling his Christian radio listeners he was questioning his early endorsement of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers," the Rocky Mountain News reports. The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today all have more on the "growing chorus of conservatives" skeptical of Miers.

Meanwhile, as Democrats watch conservatives recoil, the New York Times notes that even Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) backed off his support for Miers and said "he was now reserving judgment."

More and more people are now predicting that this nomination will be withdrawn. Those on the left who care only about outcomes (like all of the Senate Democrats) should probably shut up and start supporting this nomination, because I think Miers really is more likely to be a moderate on the court than anyone they are likely to get as a replacement nominee if she's withdrawn. On the other hand, if one cares more about having the best and the brightest on the court they should be trying to scuttle it despite the fact that a McConnell or Luttig is more likely to remain opposed to most of what they support.

Dobson has been going around saying he has information about Miers that he isn't at liberty to divulge. I think the man needs a subpoena to grant him that liberty.

A question for Miers, the best candidate available, supporters at Hypothetically Speaking

"The message of the meetings was the president consulted with 80 United States senators but didn't consult with the people who elected him." Manuel A. Miranda and the other angry conservative activists who confronted Bush's aides on Wednesday can bitch and moan all they want, but that's the way it works.

And Bill Kristol can call for Miers to withdraw, but the last time I checked, he hasn't been elected to a damn thing.

It's still the president's choice to make, and the Senate's to approve, not interest groups of ANY stripe, no matter how influential.

The Rocky Mountain News article is inaccurate and the headline is very misleading. Dr. Dobson is not questioning his earlier endorsement in the traditional sense, but rather stated the common Christian message that one can never be 100% of what God's will is (because it's His, not ours), that he's pretty sure God is calling him to support this nominee, and that if he's wrong he's praying that God will give him a sign that is so. And we worry about Iraq's new government.

RAISE YOUR PRAYERS FOR PRESIDENT BUSH WITH OTHER AMERICANS OF FAITH – CALL THE PRAYER LINE TODAY (800) 759-0700/ or visit http://www.cbn.com/contact/prayer-form.asp?topic=Other.

When President Bush nominated John Roberts for the Supreme Court, I was excited. Finally, a pro-life nominee at a time when we controlled the Senate and could assure his confirmation!

But then, John Roberts, now Chief Justice John Roberts, failed to meet my, and I expect your, expectations. He had no record on the life of the unborn. I thought this was cowardly of Bush who had told us all that he would nominate Justices in the mold of Thomas and Scalia and then when he had the chance, did not do that.

Or maybe he did. I don’t know about you but this “you’ll be impressed with him” wink, wink business isn’t nearly as bold as I expected.

And now he gets another chance to nominate a pro-life Justice and again, he goes for a weak option in Harriet Miers.

This “trust me, wink wink” business isn’t going to work. Is President Bush ashamed of being pro-life? Why does he nominate Justices that are clearly too ashamed to be honest with the public.

Clearly, President Bush has waned from his faith and he needs our help. Please pray that President Bush finds the courage and conviction to show the liberals that he is boldly pro-life and confirm to us all that Harriet Miers is pro-life.

CALL THE PRAYER LINE TODAY AND RAISE YOUR PRAYERS WITH OTHER AMERICANS OF FAITH - (800) 759-0700. You can also submit your prayer to http://www.cbn.com/contact/prayer-form.asp?topic=Other. Tell the wonderful and faithful volunteer on the line to pray with you for Bush’s soul, that he should not be punished for misleading us all to believe he is a man of faith.
