DeLay’s Defender

There hasn’t been much talk in here about the charges against Tom DeLay, and I’m glad for that. I have no idea whether he’s guilty or innocent, and I’m looking forward to the trial so that the evidence will be made public and the “he said/she said” can stop.
Comes now this AP article profiling DeLay’s defense attorney, Dick DeGuerin. He’s certain DeLay is being targeted for political reasons–not just for being a Republican, but because he helped the GOP take over the Texas House of Representatives. Of course he’s going to say that because his client is paying him to, right? Maybe so, but the interesting thing is that DeGuerin is a Democrat, the son of a Congressional staffer of Lyndon B. Johnson, and has made donations to Democrat campaigns. On the other hand, the largest recipient of his political donations was to a Republican.
..And not just to any Republican, but to a former client–Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, whom DeGuerin successfully defended against charges brought by…you guessed it, Ronnie Earle.
Update: The judge in the DeLay case is a MoveOn.org contributor. Could this case possibly get any more political?

But trials consist mostly of he said/she said, and 12 folks flipping a coin to decide who did.

Campaign finance laws should all die an ugly death. This case is proof that they are ineffective in principle and partisan in practice.
