This Will Be Interesting

Due to the indictment of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), Speaker Denny Hastert (R-IL) must nominate a replacement. Hastert plans to nominate Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) according to most reports.

To anyone with an intimate knowledge of the leadership this should raise eyebrows. Blunt is the third ranking Republican member of the House. Why would Hastert skip over David Dreier (R-CA), who was second in rank and next in line? Was it due to widespread rumors that he's gay?

Update: The Washington Post sheds light on how DeLay's successor was chosen. According to the article by Shailagh Murray and Jim VandeHei, DeLay favored Rep. Dreier but "the GOP caucus immediately erupted in anger over rumors that the selection of Dreier, whom they regard as too moderate, was being presented as a fait accompli."

There's also been some discussion that if Dreier took over, it would be seen as more of a placeholder until Delay got back, but if people didn't think Delay would be coming back, Blunt would be better in that he already has more of a political machine built around him.

But yeah, we've all heard those rumors. Americablog has dubbed him and Ken Mehlman "Closet heterosexuals" because they refuse to answer the questions when they're asked.

The rumors are not just rumors. David Dreier IS gay, and that may well be the reason why he was passed over for the spot.

I'm only vaguely familiar with Dreier (didn't know he was the 2nd ranking House Republican), but I've heard a lot about Blunt.

is there any chance that the reason he's been passed over is that they fear yet another scandal if the heat is on Dreier? Maybe the appointment scandal hinted in the linked post, or maybe they know something else.

Wait a second....David Dreier is too moderate? My God, what the hell happened to that party where David Dreier is considered a moderate?

Well, he tempers his virulently anti-gay sentiments by actually being gay. That makes him a moderate.
