I hope that's not the sound of crickets chirping.

Tom Tancredo creeps me out. In fact, most of the Republicans obsessed with (Latino) immigration creep me out. Penniless Mexicans crossing the border because of a crappy job promised by an agricultural congolmerate are not The Greatest Threat This Nation Has Ever Faced.

If we have identified somewhat with the Democrats in the last few years, are we free to berate them, as well? Oh, where to begin . . .

The federal budget is bigger under Bush than it was under Clinton. The Revolution of '94 is now most definitely dead. What the hell am I to do when the only credible alternative, the Democrats, would increase it even more? The very thing that got me interested in politics were all those books coming out in the early 90's about how bloated and idiotic many parts of the federal budget were -- the Republicans kept claiming they were the ones to stop it and they have not and they have given no indication they will. Its all about power now...and you know what I'm finding myself rationalizing that this reality is ok because of my fear of the liberal agenda.

While I can admire the mindset, I can hardly support the cause. The American people are the ones who love spending and pork. No political party could possibly be elected seriously opposing it anymore. They'd get torn apart in the press and even more by the voters.

The New Deal ended the great American experiment with limited government, and turned it into a form of socialism. The entrenched income tax, the entrenched victim/lawsuit culture supported by a liberal press and ever expanding laws, the entrenched programs of Medicare and Social Security - they are all impossible to overcome in American as it stands today. Anyone that thinks that any kind of politican is going to be able to overturn these is living in fantasy land. All either party is able to do is nibble around the edges.

So yes, I am VERY UNHAPPY about an energy bill or highway bill that contains a few hundred billion dollars in pork and deficit spending. But it is a joke to even worry about it when the combined unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare exceed $50 trillion dollars.
