I Want My . . .

On This Day in History, in 1981, the channel MTV made its debut. Not-too-particularly-young readers of ITA may be surprised to learn that the "M" in MTV once stood for music. Really. The transition from a music channel to what we have today may be lamented by some, but not really by me, since the "music" in this case was almost exclusively of the "popular" variety, and I am, alas, well outside MTV's target demographic. (I must be mistaken in my recollection that early on, there was a show hosted by Kurt Loder that ran at 2:30 am called "Yo, MTV Polkas!")

Therefore, I can't really add much to the criticisms of the channel for abandoning its titular raison d'etre, except to note this new program called "The Andy Milonakis Show." I'm not sure how to describe the experience of watching this, except to say that the executives of MTV have finally reached a level of honesty at which they can boldly let their viewers know just how little regard they have for them. Far beyond the hipster stupidity of "Beavis & Butthead," "The Tom Green Show," and "Jackass," more vapid than the melodramatic pretty people in the "Real World," et alia, "The Andy Milonakis Show" represents the nadir of MTV programming. The only conceivable reason for the network to give this guy a show is to express their utter contempt for the youngsters whose lives are so idle and trivial that they can endure a program with production costs that must be even lower than those of a test pattern.

Which is not to say that I think MTV ought to yank the show or that no one should watch it. By all means, tune in. This show is so awful it's fascinating, which may be the point after all. A new concept in TV: programming so boring you'll watch it out of incredulity. "How can this exist?" you'll silently ask yourself through 30-slackjawed-popeyed-minutes.

It's really a shame that MTV has so little to do with music these days. Even when music videos are shown, it is simply the same videos over and over. I have wondered if MTV isn't also guilty of accepting payola like some of the other music companies we have been reading about. It just seems odd that the same artists get so much attention and so many others are neglected.

MTV killed the video star.
