A Legacy

For the umpteenth year in a row Indiana Univeristy was placed in the Princeton Review's list of "Top 10 party schools." Coming in at number one in this year's highly unscientific internet poll was the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This poll now has no credibility whatsoever...

Well by a more credible measurement my alma mater, Michigan State, has them both beat. For many years, MSU led the nation in the number of alcohol-related arrests, but recently dropped to #2. But we've got a good recruiting class coming in this year, some kids who can really put it away, and we're ready to charge back up to #1.

Eek, that is far from being a credible measure either. That only says the police on that campus are more strict, better equipped, and/or more numerous than others. Indeed, that number should actually count against the school rather than for it. How can you be the number one party school when the police are always arresting you?

Perhaps a good metric would be volume of alcohol sold per capita in college towns. Any other ideas?

All I know is that Oxford, Ohio, home of my undergrad, Miami, had 15 bars in the space of 3 city blocks. Bloomington wasn't bad, but the bar concentration was less.
