Not Clement?

ABC News is reporting that Edith Clement is not Bush's choice to replace O'Connor:

Judge Edith Clement - perceived by many observers as a potential frontrunner for the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor - is not President Bush's choice for the high court.

An informed source told ABC News they had spoken with Clement and said she received a phone call from the White House this afternoon. According to the source, Clement was thanked for meeting with the president and sharing her views on the Supreme Court, but that the administration has decided to go in a "different direction."

Curiouser and curiouser. And only 3 hours to go till we find out for sure. Man, I am such a geek.

You think you're a geek. I'm supposed to be studying for the bar exam but am having a slight bit of trouble doing it with this going on. Tomorrow it will be over.

What can you tell me about John C. Roberts Jr?

John G Roberts, not C Roberts.

Here's a blurb on him from MSNBC.

"Roberts had been in line to join the appeals court in 1992, but his nomination during the first Bush administration died in a Democratic-controlled Senate. He has generally avoided weighing in on disputed social issues. Abortion rights groups, however, have maintained that he tried during his days as a lawyer in the first Bush administration to overturn Roe v. Wade."

"Roberts grew up in Long Beach, Ind., and attended a private school in nearby LaPorte before going on to Harvard and Harvard Law School."

He is 50 years old and has just over 2 years of judicial experience, having been appointed to the D.C. Ct. of Appeals in June 2003. He's worked for Rehnquist, and the Reagan and Bush I Departments of Justice. Lots of experience practicing before the US Supreme Court.

A good choice, I guess. Lots of decent credentials but not a lot of published opinions. He can blow off his briefs as being written for the client and not being reflective, necessarily, of his own personal opinions.

Anyone know what private high school Roberts attended in LaPorte???

If it couldn't be Luttig, with his W&L connections, I'll take Roberts and his Indiana connections.

NB: Roberts is a Federalist Society member. The FS's sudden, shocking, extremely dangerous influence continues to be felt.
