I’ve never been much of a fan of Tom DeLay, and I don’t know where he gets this reputation as a parliamentarian whiz. Brute force is not artful politicking. Granted, his style does produce political dividends for the Party, and his current troubles don’t seem to be unique (here, here, and here). But conservatives have a long-term problem with his leadership, i.e., his lack of character.
I’m fed up with this guy’s arrogance, and I’d guess a good number of other conservatives are, too. We should stop calling him “The Hammer.” That’s a cool nickname, even if it does nicely capture his management style. Instead, we should reflect upon a classic quote printed in the New York Times. A reporter happened to catch DeLay smoking in a government building, and pointed out that this was against federal law. DeLay’s response, “I am the federal government.”
Hmm, who does that sound like? So from now on, let’s call Tom DeLay, “The Sun Congressman.” Why not? He already shares a nickname with another French monarch. (And we know how he feels about the French.)
That classic quote sounds about as true as Sharon’s alleged quote about controlling the US. Blood pressure be damned, I’ll take that classice quote with two, thats right, two grains of salt.
Did you happen to see this in todays news?

Why bother with someone who is trying to do good? If you want to find arrogant congressmen or Senators it can be done almost without effort. Pick on the statists, the near communists, the socialists, the levelers, the race baiters, the Klansmen, the hate America firsters, etc. etc. there are plenty of them. Sorry to see the MSM leading you around by your nose.
Given that when it happened, DeLay’s staffers tried to walk it back by saying the good congressman said “I’m with the federal government,” we’re inclined to hold the salt.
He sounds rather more like this guy to us.
“Pick on the statists, the near communists, the socialists, the levelers, the race baiters, the Klansmen, the hate America firsters, etc. etc. there are plenty of them.”
I think Leon is just a simple Eliza-like artificial intelligence program that spits out variations on that response to every single possible post topic.
Herb Hamilton, my Constitutional Law professor from undergraduate days attributed a similar quote, “I am the law in Indiana,” to D. C. Stephenson, Grand Dragon of the Indiana KKK in the early 1920s, who had an office in the State Capitol building.
Stephenson was later convicted of second-degree murder.
Prof. Hamilton’s quote is confirmed at http://www.centerforhistory.org/indiana_history_main7.html.
Quite frankly, I don’t think DeLay lives up to this image.
Would that have been the Great Herb Hamilton at BSU? If so, remarkable to have a teacher with actual competence in his subject and wide ranging intellect. Was the murder connected with mercury compounds?
Meanwhile the blogs are full of rocks for the glass houses of the creeps throwing pebbles at Tom DeLay. Will someone toss some water on Pelosi just to see if she melts? The socialist member of congress, believing in distribution of wealth has most of his family on the payroll of Congress. Dirty Harry Reid of Utah, the dingbat Senator from CA, all of them are being exposed for the legal “but questionable” exact same things as Mr. DeLay. Taking a long look at congressional ethics, say 50 or 60 years, this is a subject that democrats should avoid. They should avoid it because there is alternate media that does not have to even dig to locate democrat dirt.
I can’t recall if Ben Stein was allowed to speak on campus-conservatives sometimes do but were he to speak about Tom Delay here is what he would say. Visit American Spectator, his regular column is web available.
The Best Argument Yet…
…against Rep. Tom Delay, the House Majority Leader.
