The theatrical trailer for Kingdom of Heaven is now available online. The website also offers an exclusive online trailer. This appears to be a movie of epic proportions, and I’m giddy with excitement. May 6 is the opening in the U.S.
For a movie of a completely different nature, click here for clips and pictures of Michigan State’s supposed “riots” following their NCAA tournament loss. With all due respect to my Big Ten brethren, that hardly constitutes a riot. I’m a veteran of several famous campus riots – one for the firing of Bob Knight at Indiana University and a handful of others as the team progressed to the championship game in 2002. I have those real riots on tape, but only a few pictures are available online. As an old pro I have the authority to say MSU’s antics are a far cry from Indiana’s basketball riots.

Given Ridley Scott’s spotty reputation (sure, he did Alien, Thelma and Louise, and Gladiator – but he also did 1492, White Squall, and Hannibal) and given that the resurgence of the epic movie was effectively squandered after the amazingly mediocre King Arthur and the positively embarassing Alexander, I’m not holding my breath on this one.
All epic movie previews look cool, sure, but I think I’ll just stay home and watch Cleopatra or the LotR trilogy.

Josh, I haven’t seen the footage of the latest “riot” at MSU, but I’ve been there for past riots and I can’t imagine IU has ever come close. MSU is rather legendary for such outbursts after major sporting events. In 1999, after the basketball team lost to Duke in the final four, there was a huge riot in East Lansing, including cars being turned over and set on fire. In 2000, when MSU won the championship, they had that town locked up very tight with police everywhere and kept things fairly controlled. Back in the late 80s, when I was there, the riots already happened with enough frequency to give MSU quite a reputation. It’s not something I’m proud of, by the way. For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone would think destroying property is a good way to celebrate a sporting event. In fact, I’ve long thought that a public beheading of a couple of the idiots who do it would probably put a stop to it.

The folks at Indiana did get tear-gassed once while we were there, after the defeat against Maryland. There was quite a group of people saying that the police were very much overly aggressive in using tear gas that night as well, and I basically agreed with them.

I’m sorry guys… but the ACC schools the Big Ten in basketball AND riots. UNC beat Illinois, Maryland beat Indiana, UNC beat Michigan, Duke beat Michigan….
It’s not something that I’m particularly proud of… but my MARYLAND has got to beat everyone in riots.

We riot every year. We win (or lose) a huge game, we set fires.

I’m an MSU alum, and I too recall post-big-game riots being common in the recent past; you get 40,000 young people in one spot, and a few hundred of them can get anarchic in a hurry.
The local constabulary were afraid of a repeat and erred on the hawkish side of shutting down the mob. They’ve erred on the permissive side in the past and saw a lot of property damage as a result.
