"Peace" and the American Way

The Indianapolis Star reports today on the vandalism of a beautiful Medal of Honor Memorial in downtown Indianapolis, sitting on the canal just a few blocks away from my residence. The names of 3,410 Medal of Honor winners were etched on glass panels. The violent "peace protesters" shattered the glass and spray-painted "obscene words about America, President Bush and Gov. Mitch Daniels, as well as peace symbols and other signs."

Of the many memorials in Indianapolis, this may have been my favorite. As the canal bends at the state government center, it heads south with a beautiful array of flowers, ducks, and architecture. The state museum sits elegantly on the left with the Medal of Honor Memorial serenely built into a grassy knoll on the right. Along with names of recipients etched into the glass panes, the memorial had displays and audio programs to educate visitors.

Now, thanks to anarchists advocating "peace," the memorial features spray-paint and broken glass. Perhaps city officials should leave the destruction as a monument to all that the "peace protesters" hold dear. Then rebuild the memorial nearby exactly as it was originally and let visitors see the competing ideologies side by side. In the end, the anarchists will have done much more educating than they bargained for.

I feel like I should be angry to hear about such a despicable act, but for now, all I feel is sadness. Sadness that anyone could show such an utter lack of respect for those who have given so much for a cause that they believed in.

You want to protest the war? Fine. Protest the war, hold up your signs and shout in the streets about how you think Bush is a terrible guy, whatever. But this kind of act, an act done in anonymity and with such a lack of respect, is pathetic. My heart goes out to those who have to see the memories of their loved ones treated with such disregard. It sickens me to hear of it.

But of course they don't speak for the peace movement ideology any more than Timothy McVey spoke for the limited government ideology.

While I agree that these "protesters" don't speak for all anti-war advocates, I don't think a comparison to McVey is all that helpful. McVey's heinous act is, well, very rare. But these sort of things happen much more frequently.

But they are in the same extreme vein even if one is the extreme of the extreme.

I must say I am a bit surprised that there is no video camera footage (at least none is mentioned) on any of the canal buildings.

Well, I would say that in the wake of 9/11, acts of vandalism against American Muslims have probably been just as frequent as vandalism by "peace protesters" of memorials. I would also assume that most of those who have vandalized Muslim properties are "war supporters."

This monument did little to promote foreign policy behind U.S. armed conflicts, but did exault and honor the Hoosier brave and fallen for standing tall when our elected leaders called for their service. The monument greatly served as support for current troops and military families, informing them that regardless of the politics behind the decision to go to war, we supported them to the end. And here I was led to believe the anti-war protesters felt the same way. I'm glad most Americans never fell for their sophistic refutations of anti-patriotism.

Hanafee said investigators will see if two security cameras in the area captured the vandalism.

Well I stand corrected, but said line was not in the original IndyStar.com article that I read. At least I wasn't seeing things when I noticed cameras on the building across from the memorial.
