Chuck Simmins has tried to tabulate contributions by American individuals and companies to tsunami relief efforts. His total so far: $169 million and rising, not including the aircraft carriers.

The Japanese don’t pay for their own defense, and unlike the U.S., the Japanese still have to atone for what they did to Indonesia and S.E. Asia.
