(You can only read this post if you’ve watched “Reading on a Dream”, today’s must-watch video.)
How should a blogger respond to “The Library Musical”? Oh, sure, it’s easy to applaud the creativity of the group that produced it; their technical skill at editing; their use of guerrilla tactics to subvert our notions of what a “library” is; their knowing wink at the conventions of musical theater; and, of course, the bravery of the actors in the production.
But that is not what bloggers do! Bloggers do outrage! And I am outraged!
Think of what this video espouses: Mockery! Anti-social behavior! Inconsiderateness! (Inconsideration?) Bad dancing! Art for art’s sake! What kind of a sick society produced the adolescents who think that this is a productive use of their time?
I’m disgusted by this. It’s all the media’s fault, of course, what with their endorsement of the Singing-American lifestyle. When Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando teach children that it’s okay to use your superior singing or acting ability to manipulate missionaries and take them to Cuba, then can we really be surprised when outbreaks of creativity like this happen?
But the media have their enablers–the craven crooked politicians bought off by the Hollywood bigwigs who don’t give a damn about values. It’s even still legal to perform “West Side Story” in this country, even though the play is all about the charms of gangsterism, street violence, and amazingly graceful balletic dance moves. Is that the kind of message we want our youth to receive? I think not!
We have to act now–before free will and creativity strike again.
At least the video doesn’t contain a bare back. That would be truly offensive.
I laughed at least half as much in reading your post as I did in watching the video. I’ve sometimes gone a whole week without that much entertainment.
Paul, the WWE had a wonderful take on the MNF event.
