Ramesh Ponnuru remarks, "This seems to be its breakout year. I'm seeing tons of references to it this year for some reason." I would guess that many people are sick of Christmas, but don't want to be anti-holiday. Festivus is an attractive alternative. It is minimalist (the unadorned aluminium pole), self-righteous (the airing of grievances), and absurd (the feats of strength). What more could a Gen-Xer want? If they were merely against "commercialism", then they would just stop buying presents for rich people...and instead, give them to the poor...whoops, I forgot: Seinfeld liberals don't give to the poor. That is for Mississippi rednecks , or for my neighbors who have three kids in a two bedroom house, yet collected presents for their small church to give to some "poor" families... Christmas' lessons: that the first shall be last, and the last first, that the really important people are not the chic or trendy nihilists, are not welcome to Gen X narcissists...but I hate to tell you, such Gen X narcissists are soooo Sept 10th...and the Millenial generation is quietly taking their place...
