Happy Festivus!
Finally, a Festivus for the rest of us. Get the full details here.
Ramesh Ponnuru remarks, "This seems to be its breakout year. I'm seeing tons of references to it this year for some reason."
I would guess that many people are sick of Christmas, but don't want to be anti-holiday. Festivus is an attractive alternative. It is minimalist (the unadorned aluminium pole), self-righteous (the airing of grievances), and absurd (the feats of strength). What more could a Gen-Xer want? Oh yeah, it's also retro; Festivus was invented in 1966.
Now, who wants to pin me to the floor?

That sounds dumb! Happy Festivus! I could care less. Merry Christmas! Now that sounds better. Selah!

I'd love to pin you to the floor, Zach - especially if I can kiss you at the same time. Festively, of course. x x

Festivus seems to be the "holiday" for the PC nihilists.
They avoid "christmas" because it is too "commercial", but actually what they want is to mock the religious aspects of Christmas and Hanukah.
If they were merely against "commercialism", then they would just stop buying presents for rich people...and instead, give them to the poor...whoops, I forgot: Seinfeld liberals don't give to the poor. That is for Mississippi rednecks , or for my neighbors who have three kids in a two bedroom house, yet collected presents for their small church to give to some "poor" families...
Christmas' lessons: that the first shall be last, and the last first, that the really important people are not the chic or trendy nihilists, are not welcome to Gen X narcissists...but I hate to tell you, such Gen X narcissists are soooo Sept 10th...and the Millenial generation is quietly taking their place...
