11 Day Affair

“Florida’s election supervisors, impressed by the success of early voting, proposed dramatic reforms that would eliminate Election Day, replace it with an 11-day election season covering two weekends, and do away with precincts,” the Miami Herald reports. The relevant Constitutional provision is in Article 1, Section 4: “The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.”

Doesn’t seem like a great idea to me. Having polls open for that long expands the opportunity for multiple-voting, vote tampering, and other methods of fraud. I could understand the push for early voting this year because of concerns about new voting machines, but I don’t think we should end “Election Day” as we know it.
