Good news across the pond

The European Wind Energy Association held its annual meeting in London this week and projected that offshore "wind farms" covering an area the size of Greece could meet Europe's electricity needs with no greenhouse gas emissions. The biggest hurdle, besides suspected harm to birds, is the "visual pollution" caused by the turbines.

In my (somewhat) informed opinion as an erstwhile physics type, I'd judge this as "good news" only in the same sense that increased ethanol subsidies are "good news".

Good news, that is, for the industry receiving the taxpayer largesse, and for just about no one else. Wind power may well be renewable—but one thing it is not is reliable.
